Location-Aware Adaptive Vehicle Dynamics System: Brake Modulation

A Location-Aware Adaptive Vehicle Dynamics System (LAAVDS) is developed to assist the driver in maintaining vehicle handling capabilities through various driving maneuvers. An integral part of this System is an Intervention Strategy that uses a novel measure of handling capability, the Performance Margin, to assess the need to intervene. Through this strategy, the driver's commands are modulated to affect desired changes to the Performance Margin in a manner that is minimally intrusive to the driver's control authority. Real-time implementation requires the development of computationally efficient predictive vehicle models. This work develops one means to alter the future vehicle states: modulating the driver's brake commands. This control strategy must be considered in relationship to changes in the throttle commands. Three key elements of this strategy are developed in this work.

Development of HEV Engine Start-Shock Prediction Technique Combining Motor Generator System Control and Multi-Body Dynamics (MBD) Models

Previous reports have already described the details of engine start-shock and the mechanism of vibration mechanism in a stationary vehicle. This vibration can be reduced by optimized engine and motor generator vibration-reduction controls. A prediction method using a full-vehicle MBD model has also been developed and applied in actual vehicle development. This paper describes the outline of a new method for the hybrid system of mechanical power split device with two motors that predicts engine start-shock when the vehicle is accelerating while the engine is stopped. It also describes the results of mechanism analysis and component contribution analysis. This method targets engine start-shock caused by driving torque demand during acceleration after vehicle take-off. The hybrid control system is modeled by MATLAB/Simulink. A power management and motor generator control program used in actual vehicles is installed into the main part of the control system model.

Actuator Fault Detection and Diagnosis of 4WID/4WIS Electric Vehicles

A fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) algorithm of 4WID/4WIS Electric Vehicles has been proposed in this study aiming to find the actuator faults. The 4WID/4WIS EV is one of the promising architectures for electric vehicle designs which is driven independently by four in-wheel motors and steered independently by four steering motors. The 4WID/4WIS EVs have many potential abilities in advanced vehicle control technologies, but diagnosis and accommodation of the actuator faults becomes a significant issue. The proposed FDD approach is an important part of the active fault tolerant control (AFTC) algorithm. The main objective of the FDD approach is to monitor vehicle states, find the faulty driving motor and then feedback fault information to the controller which would adopt appropriate control laws to accommodate the post-fault vehicle control system.

Virtual Platform Development for New Control Logic Concept Test and Validation

As computer-aided engineering software tools advance, more simulation-based processes are utilized to reduce development time and cost. Traditionally, during the development of a new control algorithm dyno or on-road testing is necessary to validate a new function, however, physical testing is both costly and time consuming. This study introduces a co-simulation platform and discusses its use as an improved method of powertrain control logic development. The simulation platform consists of a dynamic vehicle model, virtual road network and simulated traffic objects. Engineers can utilize Matlab/Simulink along with other programs such as PTV Vissim, Tass Prescan, and AVL Cruise to create an integrated platform capable of testing and validating new control strategies. The structure and configuration of this virtual platform is explained in this paper, and an example use case is demonstrated. A driver model was developed to simulate realistic vehicle inputs.

Co-Simulation of BLDC Motor Control and Clutch Actuation System with Ball Ramp Mechanism

Electro-mechanical actuators are widely used in different forms in the automotive industry these days and are very effective in translating rotary motion of the motor to a linear motion with precision as per the requirement. With onset of electric drivelines and other complex driveline configurations, there is an increase in actuator applications. In this study, high fidelity analytical model was developed for a ball ramp clutch actuation system as per the proposed mechanical design and the software controls. The controls architecture is built in SIMULINK environment to drive the plant model of the BLDC motor. Whereas, the entire mechanical system which includes the gear train, ball ramp mechanism, clutch pack stiffness, etc. is modelled in ADAMS tool. The Ball Ramp consists of metal balls positioned in between opposing paired arc-shaped ramp grooves and guided by a cage to keep them equally separated in the same plane.

Development of a Camera-Based Driver State Monitoring System for Cost-Effective Embedded Solution

To prevent the severe consequences of unsafe driving behaviors, it is crucial to monitor and analyze the state of the driver. Developing an effective driver state monitoring (DSM) systems is particularly challenging due to limited computation capabilities of embedded systems in automobiles and the need for finishing processing in real-time. However, most of the existing research work was conducted in a lab environment with expensive equipment while lacking in-car benchmarking and validation. In this paper, a DSM system that estimates driver's alertness and drowsiness level as well as performs emotion detection built with a cost-effective embedded system is presented. The proposed system consists of a mono camera that captures driver's facial image in real-time and a machine learning based detection algorithm that detects facial landmark points and use that information to infer driver's state.

Validity Assessment and Calibration Approach for Simulation Models of Energy Efficiency of Light-Duty Vehicles

Software tools for simulations of vehicle fuel economy/energy efficiency play an important role strategic decision-making in advanced powertrains. In general, there is a trade-off between the level of detail in a numerical model of a vehicle (higher detail provides better simulation accuracy), and the computational time resources to run the model. However, even with detailed models of a vehicle, there remains some uncertainty about how the vehicle performs in the real-world. Calibration of simulation models versus real-world data is a challenging task due to variations in vehicle usage by different owners. This work utilizes datasets of real-world driving in vehicles that have been equipped with OBD/GPS loggers. The loggers record at fairly high frequency the vehicle speed, road slope, cabin heating/air-conditioning loads, as well as energy/fuel consumption.

An Application of a Model-Prediction-Based Reference Modification Algorithm to Engine Air Path Control

In real-world automotive control, there are many constraints to be considered. In order to explicitly treat the constraints, we introduce a model-prediction-based algorithm called a reference governor (RG). The RG generates modified references so that predicted future variables in a closed-loop system satisfy their constraints. One merit of introducing the RG is that effort required in control development and calibration would be reduced. In the preceding research work by Nakada et al., only a single reference case was considered. However, it is difficult to extend the previous work to more complicated systems with multiple references such as the air path control of a diesel engine due to interference between the boosting and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) systems. Moreover, in the air path control, multiple constraints need to be considered to ensure hardware limits. Hence, it is quite beneficial to cultivate RG methodologies to deal with multiple references and constraints.

Development of CFD Inverse Analysis Technology Using the Transient Adjoint Method and Its Application to Engine In-Cylinder Flow

Conventional CFD-based shape optimization technology that uses parametric shape modification and optimal solutions searching algorithms has the two problems: (1) outcome of optimized shapes depend on the selection of design parameters made by the designer, and (2) high computational costs. To resolve those problems, two innovative inverse analysis technologies based on the Adjoint Method were developed in previous study: surface geometry deformation sensitivity analysis to identify the locations to be modified, and topology optimization to generate an optimal shape for maximizing the cost function in the constrained design space. However, these technologies are only applicable to steady flows. Since most flows in a vehicle (such as engine in-cylinder flow) are transient, a practical technology for surface geometry sensitivity analysis has been developed based on the Transient Adjoint Method.

Pedestrian/Bicyclist Limb Motion Analysis from 110-Car TASI Video Data for Autonomous Emergency Braking Testing Surrogate Development

Many vehicles are currently equipped with active safety systems that can detect vulnerable road users like pedestrians and bicyclists, to mitigate associated conflicts with vehicles. With the advancements in technologies and algorithms, detailed motions of these targets, especially the limb motions, are being considered for improving the efficiency and reliability of object detection. Thus, it becomes important to understand these limb motions to support the design and evaluation of many vehicular safety systems. However in current literature, there is no agreement being reached on whether or not and how often these limbs move, especially at the most critical moments for potential crashes. In this study, a total of 832 pedestrian walking or cyclist biking cases were randomly selected from one large-scale naturalistic driving database containing 480,000 video segments with a total size of 94TB, and then the 832 video clips were analyzed focusing on their limb motions.

A Co-Simulation Platform for Powertrain Controls Development

With the advancement of simulation software development, the efficiency of vehicle and powertrain controls research and development can be significantly improved. Traditionally, during the development of a new control algorithm, dyno or on-road testing is necessary to validate the algorithm. Physical testing is not only costly, but also time consuming. In this study, a virtual platform is developed to reduce the effort of testing. To improve the simulation accuracy, co-simulation of multiple software is suggested as each software specializes in certain area. The Platform includes Matlab Simulink, PTV Vissim, Tass Prescan and AVL Cruise. PTV Vissim is used to provide traffic environment to PreScan. PreScan is used for ego vehicle simulation and visualization. Traffic, signal and road network are synchronized in Vissim and PreScan. Powertrain system is simulated in Cruise. MATALB/Simulink serves as master of this co-simulation, and integrates the different software together.

Simulation and Analysis of a Resolver for HEV Electric Drive Application

Resolvers as position and speed sensors are widely used in many areas including the automotive industry, especially in the application of an electric drive for a hybrid electric vehicle. One of the disadvantages of using resolvers is that their complexity usually leads to quality issues during development that requires engineering resources and time to solve, which could be better served in solving the complex system issues of improving the hybrid system functionality. This paper describes the creation of a full resolver system simulation that can be used to prevent development issues, improve the hybrid system DFMEA, and act as a catalyst for solving development issues when they do happen.

Modeling of Li-ion Battery Performance in Hybrid Electric Vehicles

Considerable improvements can be obtained in battery performance for hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) by employing an electrochemistry-transport model based on a multi-physics modeling framework and ultrafast numerical algorithms. One important advantage of this approach over the lumped equivalent circuit (or look-up table) approach is the ability of the former to adapt to changes in design and control. In this work, we present mathematical and numerical details of our approach, and demonstrate the robustness of this battery model in simulation of short-pulse charge/discharge characteristic of HEV driving cycles under room and low temperatures.

Efficient Stochastic Optimization using Chaos Collocation Method with modeFRONTIER

Robust Design Optimization (RDO) using traditional approaches such as Monte Carlo (MC) sampling requires tremendous computational expense. Performing a RDO for problems involving time consuming CAE analysis may not even be possible within time constraints. In this paper a new stochastic modeling technique based on chaos collocation method is used to measure the mean and standard deviation (σ) for uncertain output parameters. For a given accuracy, chaos collocation method requires far less sample evaluations compared to MC. The efficient evaluation of mean and std. deviation terms using chaos collocation method makes it quite attractive to be used with RDO methods. In this work the RDO of an automotive engine design is performed employing chaos collocation method.

Semi-Active Vibration Control of Landing Gear Using Magneto-Rhelological Dampers

Magneto-rhelological(MR) dampers are devices that use rheological fluids to modify the mechanical properties of fluid absorber. The mechanical simplicity, high dynamic range, large force capacity, lower power requirements, robustness and safe manner of operation have made MR dampers attractive devices for semi-active real-time control in civil, aerospace and automotive applications. Landing gear is one of the most essential components of the aircraft, which plays an extreme important role in preventing the airframe from vibration and excessive impact forces, improving passenger comfortable characteristics and increasing aircraft flight safety. In this paper, the semi-active system used in landing gear damping controller design, simulation, and the vibration test-bed are discussed and researched. The MR dampers employed in landing gear system were designed, manufactured and characterized as available semi-active actuators.

Optimization Strategies to Explore Multiple Optimal Solutions and Its Application to Restraint System Design

Design optimization techniques are widely used to drive designs toward a global or a near global optimal solution. However, the achieved optimal solution often appears to be the only choice that an engineer/designer can select as the final design. This is caused by either problem topology or by the nature of optimization algorithms to converge quickly in local/global optimal or both. Problem topology can be unimodal or multimodal with many local and/or global optimal solutions. For multimodal problems, most global algorithms tend to exploit the global optimal solution quickly but at the same time leaving the engineer with only one choice of design. The paper explores the application of genetic algorithms (GA), simulated annealing (SA), and mixed integer problem sequential quadratic programming (MIPSQP) to find multiple local and global solutions using single objective optimization formulation.
